The project was inspired by the ‘trolls’ from Nordic folklore. Trolls are believed to be supernatural beings, such as ghosts and witches dwelling around rivers, rocks, mountains, or caves. During my residency, I took several walks in the mountains and by the water, in order to look for their traces.

The tales of trolls give insights into how we imagine beings other than humans living in nature. They also reveal the unseen parts of our surroundings that are yet to be revealed.

‘Troll space’ is defined here as a psychological moment where people overlap their abnormal experiences and imagination of the surrounding environment, and start to speculate about the existence of beings other than humans. Troll space could not exist without human experience; trolls are a reflection of the undesirable aspects of ourselves.

This speculation is an attempt to find ways to peek into the imagined and unseen worlds and examine the dark side of ourselves that has secretly haunted us.
